Data Scientists Find Meaning in Numbers

Author: Sarah Williams

When you think of a hacker, do you think of a young woman who loves the outdoors and fitness, who has worked waiting tables, and enjoys cooking at home? Maybe you should.

Tatisana Maskalevich, a data scientist with Accenture Technology Labs, participated with her team in the 2013 National Day of Civic Hacking. A challenge was issued by FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, to make data about fires easily understandable and available to anyone working on fire prevention around the country. FEMA asked teams to "build an online data visualization tool that allows the public and fire departments to view fire incident data." Other challenges issued in this national datafest included the Department of Health and Human Services' call to visually depict hospital charges and a prompt from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to develop a "Backyard Poultry Farmer app." (The list of challenges is online at www.hackforchange.org/challenges.)
